Green Sod Ireland : Save A Sod
A campaign to protect Irish biodiversity and wild acres
“Now is the time for us to act together, to protect what is in danger of being lost forever” as David Attenborough says, “If we don’t, who will?”
Today is the launch of Save A Sod, a new way to contribute and commit to protecting Irish Biodiversity, presented by Green Sod Ireland land trust. We would like to highlight this fantastic initiative, and pay tribute to the important work this charity does to protect the land and all its biodiversity.
Green Sod Ireland was established in 2006 in response to rapid loss of land. To protect and conserve Irish land in perpetuity, for the sake of its indigenous inhabitants: animals, plants, soils, rocks, micro-organisms and the like for their own sake, for present and future generations. Over these years Green Sod Ireland have been gifted in excess of 100 acres by visionary individuals and communities, in Counties Galway, Cork, Carlow, Donegal, Mayo and Cavan.
Gifted land needs first and foremost to be appraised by ecologists who complete an initial ecology report with findings and recommendations. The diversity of land across Ireland means individual management plans are created to address the specific needs of each.
The charity also work with local communities, raising awareness of the health, educational, social, economic and environmental benefits of caring for the land and its biodiversity. The local community participate in the protection of land, and are invited to engage in their ecological education initiatives. In the true spirit of sustainability Green Sod Ireland ‘believe communities are an integral part of holding this land in trust together.’

“Look closely at nature. Every species is a masterpiece, exquisitely adapted to the particular environment in which it has survived. Who are we to destroy or even diminish biodiversity?”
